Leaving your job
Unemployment benefits in Germany, for internationals.
Checked against arbeitsagentur.de · October 2026Arbeitslosengeld is unemployment insurance, paid from the contributions deducted from your salary, and your passport does not change whether you get it. What does change it is timing. Register as job-seeking at least three months before your job ends, or within three days of learning it will, and register as unemployed on your first day without work.

Insurance, not welfare.
Every month you were employed in Germany, a share of your salary went into unemployment insurance; your payslip lists it as Arbeitslosenversicherungunemployment insurance. Arbeitslosengeldunemployment benefit, often called ALG I is that insurance paying out. It is not a social-welfare payment and it is not charity. Claiming it is the normal use of a contract you paid into.
The welfare-type payment is a different thing: Grundsicherungsgeldbasic income support from the Jobcenter, since July 2026; it replaced Bürgergeld, for people without an insurance entitlement or after it runs out. This guide is about the insurance.
Who gets it.
Eligibility depends on contributions, not nationality. The usual condition is at least twelve months of insured employment in Germany within the last thirty months. A residence permit that is tied to one employer does not block the benefit; the agency’s own guidance says so.
Two things end or shorten it, both in your hands: registering late, and leaving the job yourself.
The two registrations, and their deadlines.
Deadlines under the SGB III. Registering as job-seeking late usually costs a one-week Sperrzeit.
Register as job-seeking, arbeitsuchend. At least three months before your job ends, or within three days of learning that it will, whichever comes first. Online, by phone or in person. Late registration usually means a one-week Sperrzeit.
Register as unemployed, arbeitslos, and apply for Arbeitslosengeld. On your first day without work at the latest. The agency then issues a Bescheid with the amount and the end date.
Enter your two dates on the How it works page and it shows your deadlines.
Quitting, and the Sperrzeit.
If you end the job yourself, or sign an Aufhebungsvertraga mutual termination agreement, the agency usually imposes a Sperrzeita block without benefit of twelve weeks, and your total entitlement shrinks by at least a quarter (§ 148 SGB III). Wanting to start a business does not count as a good reason that avoids the block.
For founders this matters twice: you lose benefit, and the shorter entitlement can push you below the 150 days the Gründungszuschuss needs on the day you apply. If you are employed with no notice, read the guide Quit or wait before you decide anything.
If you hold a residence permit.
Two rules from the residence law, both worth knowing before you plan.
- If your permit was issued for work or training, you must tell the Ausländerbehördethe foreigners' office within two weeks of learning that your job ends (§ 82 AufenthG). The permit does not lapse by itself.
- Receiving Arbeitslosengeld is an insurance benefit you earned; it is not the same as receiving social welfare. What it means for your specific permit is a question for an immigration lawyer or your Ausländerbehörde, not for this guide.
From benefit to business.
Arbeitslosengeld is also the base for the founder route: the agency can fund founder coaching through an AVGS voucher while you plan, and the Gründungszuschuss continues your benefit plus €300 a month for six months once you start, if the agency approves. Both are discretionary. Both need the registrations above to be on time.
